Not a good analogy with WANG. You don't need a router on every desk... you do need you application on your desk or at least "served" to you. I agree that that Fortune 1000 will not use a multi-purpose platform for infrastructure. As for the "masses" they will make decisions based upon their needs. The question will be will you buy a Server, Server software, associated routing software, your 10/100 hardware, voice interfaces, etc. etc. which underperforms for say $4000 or will you buy a single turn key router for $6000. That will be the question. Yes, some customers may try out the multi-purpose platform... but if Microsoft's success with Steelhead is any indication this market will be small. Support, performance, management, etc.. are all hurdles that need to be overcome. By the time Nortel and their 3rd party developers get products to market they'll be well behind in multiservice data, video and voice which Cisco and other deliver on their router platforms... and Cisco's reliablity (as bad and many people claim it is) will be far higher than on any NT4.0/Win2000 platform. Any real business doing business over the web will not commit their success to NT/Win2000 anytime soon.
