Msft has an even greater problem, it's office suite is
both larger, they are embroiled with a legal dispute
regarding Java, and not all their browsers even ship with
a JVM.

I don't think anyone can realistically expect to have an
office suite over the internet that is fully comparable
to current hairballs, the bandwidth is just not there.
These are the following possible scenarios:

1) A local graphics server that is minimally downloaded,
using Citrix or iPlanet technology, will all the
computing at the server.
2) A new market segment of reduced functionality with
minimal dynamic code loaded from the net
3) Networked storage of files, incremental application
updates but otherwise a locally stored and executed
application
