Can anyone here tell me if it would be unusual for
a company like Merrill Lynch to take a stake (say 6%) in a
pharmaceutical research company???

You are confusing past history and future pipeline. PFE has stalled badly recently with Trovan problems, big delay in migraine drug and nothing on the horizon to be marketed soon.
Spending on R&D is great but "where's the beef"?
Some of PFE best sellers are not even theirs; Celebrex [Searle] Lipator [WLA]. Where are the PFE originals???

AHP has new drugs and vaccine just getting approval. New drugs and markets for AHP in next two years much brighter than for PFE.
