BHP Australia Reduces Network Downtime With New Cabletron ATM Network ATM Backbone Crucial For BHP OPerations At Australia's Largest Industrial Site ROCHESTER, N.H., & PORT KEMBLA, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1999--Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced that the international resources company Broken Hill Proprietary Limited (BHP), whose interests include oil, gas, steel, minerals and IT business solutions, has successfully implemented a Cabletron ATM solution for its extensive Port Kembla Steel Works site. BHP has a network spanning an area of 12 square kilometers across the Port Kembla industrial site. The ATM backbone is connected to Ethernet segments used by more than 5,000 users, and is used to run all IT operations controlling the industrial plant. The network and all Local Area Networking (LAN) implementations utilize more than 100 kilometers of multi-mode and single-mode fiber optic cable. Chris Reid, engineering supervisor for computer systems and services at BHP said, ''Cabletron's ATM solution has paid off for us in terms of downtime reduction and network reliability. We wanted a mature technology, and something that would provide us with the long-term application support that we felt the business would need. This solution has future applications for us in that it can deliver voice, data, and video reliably in our environment.'' Reid added, ''At the time we installed the network, ATM was a fledgling technology, so it was a make-or-break decision for us to go with it. Thankfully, Cabletron has provided the local expertise to ensure that this business-critical network is now able to support the entire range of business needs that we need it to.'' A key concern for BHP was transition from their existing 5 mbps broadband network to the new ATM-supported network. The implementation was so successful that users were taken off-line for only minutes at a time before they were routed into the new network, minimizing outages and other potentially damaging operational problems.
