>"In modern terminology, a "workstation" is anything that's not a "server"." Not quite. In Dellspeak, a "workstation" is dual-processor ready, and has a fast SCSI drive. Also, they are predictably overpriced for what you get. That Workstation link on the Dell site showed a system that was $2155, and had: 450Mhz PII 64MB 100Mhz SDRAM 9GB 7200rpm SCSI 2/WIDE 17" monitor 32MB video card, top flight there. NT Workstation no speakers no modem no network card all in all, pretty basic system. You can get a lot more for your money over in the "Desktop" section of the Dell site. Except you have to accept either MS-Works or MS-Office SBE, no substitutions allowed. So the point is not lost. I wouldn't buy a Dell Workstation for home use, because it would not be the right tool for the right job. What I got was from Quantex Microsystems 600 PIII 9GB 7200rpm Ultra2 EIDE drive 128MB 100 Mhz SDRAM 32MB S3 video card Internal Zip drive DVD player US Robotic 56K Voice modem 3Com Fast ethernet 10/100 Lan card 19" Quantex flat screen monitor (not flat panel display, but flat screen) Aureal Vortex PCI sound card Altec Lansing ACS45.1 speakers w/subwoofer Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 Win98 SE $2458 including shipping, which was ~$130 ------- Now you tell me how much that Dell Workstation would be, similarly loaded. I'm not even going to bother try it, because I know it would sky-high. So my point has not been lost. twisted-pair 10mb network my Quantex 233 PII laptop with the desktop, with an Intel InBusiness 5-port hub. My old Dell P100 doesn't get much use anymore, although I bought a network card and CAT-5 wire to network to it. I haven't got that task done yet.
