On the other hand, he did not intend the end of the Soviet Empire, but only a retrenchment, and events clearly overtook him, and went far beyond his intentions..... I will never be able to fathom another man's mind. However, a smart person like Mr. Gorbachev would have an inkling of what he was about to start. It is my belief that he understood his decisions would mean the end of the Soviet Union. I leave it up to you to convince me he did not understand the implication of his decisions. Bob
