Iraq in favor of extending OPEC production agreement

Iraqi Oil Minister Amir Rashid ? on a three-day visit to Venezuela aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations ? says the Arab nation is likely to be in favor of extending OPEC production cuts beyond a March 2000 deadline.

Rashid is meeting President Hugo Ch vez today and without revealing any details said that he would deliver a special message from Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Saddam has been invited to the OPEC heads of state and oil ministers summit to be held in Caracas beginning next March 27. However it is not yet known whether the Iraqi leader will attend. He has not left Iraq since the Gulf War at the beginning of the decade.

Meanwhile, Energy and Mines Minister Ali Rodr¡guez and Deputy Foreign Minister Jorge Valero are off to Vienna for a technical meeting that will include handing over a first draft due to be signed next year by OPEC heads of state at the Caracas summit.

From there, Rodr¡guez is due to make a tour of Gulf OPEC nations as he continues to prepare for the March summit and at the same time keep in touch with developments in the oil world.

Next week, Rodr¡guez will be meeting with his Saudi Arabian and Mexican counterparts in Riyadh ? the main purpose of his visit to the region.
