My only dispute is that, having used many Microsoft products, including both Windows 95 and Windows 98, I fail to see why Microsoft thinks these products and the accompanying applications are so wonderful. I get mysterious crashes on a regular basis. I find that some of the operations that the user must perform are nothing less than arcane. I personally prefer the smooth, robust, nearly crash free performance of the Macintosh.

msft has divided the os into essentially two business models. The first is targeted to consumers i.e. 95/98/etc, while the second (in theory, a more robust and less crash prone flavor) is targeted to the business community i.e NT.

This leads to the following two well defined breakup candidates. Although, I suspect that perhaps NT may require further breakup into other components:

Microsoft Consumer Software (Corp?)
Windows 95, 98, and future 98 derivatives

Microsoft Business Software (Corp?)
Windows NT 3.51, 4.0, and future 4.0 derivatives
