CAIS - Big news out! United Dominion and CAIS Internet to Deliver High-Speed Internet Access to Apartment Residents in 32 U.S. Markets WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1999--United Dominion Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE:UDR - news) announced today that it has signed an agreement designating CAIS Internet (Nasdaq:CAIS - news) as the company's preferred broadband Internet services provider. Residents of United Dominion apartment communities will be able to access the Internet up to 50 times faster than with traditional dial-up connections, and have the ability to make and receive telephone calls on the same line simultaneously. As one of the largest multi-family apartment owners and developers in the country, United Dominion will make high-speed Internet access available to more than 80,000 apartment homes in 21 states. Installation will begin within the month, with Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, and Phoenix among the first markets to receive this broadband Internet service. ``Our goal at United Dominion is to provide our residents with an exceptional living experience,' said John McCann, Chief Executive Officer. ``We continually strive to offer new features that enhance the living environment of our customers. The CAIS high-speed Internet solution is an essential link to today's high-tech world at an affordable price, as it eliminates the need for a second phone line and an Internet provider. While offering this attractive service to our customers, the CAIS package also provides the company with marketing advantages and financial benefits.' The CAIS broadband solution does not require rewiring the communities, and can be installed in occupied apartments with a minimal one-time visit. Thereafter, the resident simply signs on for the service and is ready to connect to the Internet. ``CAIS Internet is pleased to deliver its total solution for high-speed access with an apartment industry leader like United Dominion,' said CAIS Internet CEO Ulysses G. Auger, II. ``Delivering the leading edge multi-user CAIS solution to United Dominion's residents will help set the standard for high-tech amenities in apartment communities.' United Dominion's internal communications systems will also be significantly upgraded using the same CAIS infrastructure, enabling concurrent development of a high-speed WAN (wide area network). ``This broadband WAN will give us the ability to exchange real time information with our communities and is essential to the deployment in 2000 of `Javalon', a state-of-the-art web-based operating system currently under development in a joint venture between United Dominion and AvalonBay,' said John Schneider, Chief Operating Officer. ``Together with our newly installed web-based financial and reporting systems, these innovations will help to ensure that our company will become a more efficient provider of quality apartment homes and continue to play a leading role in the technological advancement of our industry.'
