Hey, I never said it was the most prescient analysis anybody ever wrote. I just thought it was refreshing to see an even handed assessment. What did you think of Philips' comment that Pat is influenced by Fenianism? I've been kicking that one around for a couple of weeks now.

I recently read a book by Conor Cruise O'Brien that recounts the Easter Uprising of 1916 and the years that followed. I was struck by the similarities one can draw between Patrick Pearse's crusade to start the uprising and especially Eamon de Valera's role afterwards.

Sinn Fein was in a shambles after the uprising was put down and Pearse was shot for treason. (Or, as he planned it, was crucified in the mode of Yeats' "terrible beauty") de Valera stepped in, and with his fiery speeches, turned Sinn Fein around and gained enough support to topple the status quo Irish Parliamentary Party.

I'll wager that Pat, being the history buff that he is, is acutely aware of the parallels. I think he's one of those Irish guys in the mode of Wolfe Tone, Pearse, de Valera, and Michael Collins. Or at least he sees himself that way. This thing may get mystical on us.

If the election were held today I'd vote for Dubya, but if Buchanan starts talking about Cuchulain and Cathleen ni Houlihan I'm grabbing my pitchfork.
