I got to talk with Kroger's CFO yesterday. I asked him a general question about their interest in all of these POS and other productivity/marketing technologies that constantly get introduced and what the interest is and how they evaluate whether to deploy them. He said they measure things in terms of payback (either payback period or ROI). On ESL's specifically, he said they have trialed them 4 times now and still can't justify the expense. They don't see the labor savings claimed by ESL vendors and customers don't really care that much. Not very encouraging.
