Yes, and none of us means to make light of that. If we can assume that the killers really did intend to send a message, I think we can assume that the reference was to Chalem, not Lehmann, who wasn't treated in the same manner. Logically, it would follow that Chalem was killed either because he'd talked, the message in that case being that anyone else who might consider doing so would meet the same end; or because he was planning to talk, in which case, of course, the message would be the same. I do believe that the killing was done when it was done for a very specific reason: either because Chalem was about to do/say something that would compromise the killer, or because he'd already done damage, but not total damage, and that damage had to be contained. Obviously, we need to know more about the planned trip to Tennessee. We need also to know what he did the last week of his life. Whom did he talk to? Phone records should help. Where was he? Always at the Colts Neck house? He didn't drive, so presumably if he went anywhere, the person who accompanied him would know about it. Again: killers presumably don't want extra mess, so having Kim and Jesse Jr out of the house would make things easier. Who told the assassin that they wouldn't be there? Someone Kim knew, or someone Chalem knew? And once more: I'm convinced that the killers had been to the house before. I've driven around horse country in Pennsylvania, and never mind whether you have a map or not; getting lost is really easy. And I LIVED there. I very much doubt that the "Bluebell Lane" sign, if there was one, was easily visible at night.
