CHICAGO, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Dain Rauscher Wessels said in a research note Wednesday it is initiating coverage of Internet access software provider Liberate Technologies with a buy rating.

-- Dain Rauscher Wessels said it believes San Carlos, Calif.-based Liberate's set-top boxes, which provide Internet access through television sets, will be favored as an alternative to Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ: MSFT) WebTV product.

-- Dain Rauscher Wessels is setting its fiscal 2000 year- end price target of Liberate at $94.

-- "While Liberate is not yet profitable, it has already established relationships with several large technology vendors and has a strong initial customer base," Dain Rauscher Wessels said in the research note.

-- Liberate shares were up 20-1/8 at 98-5/8 in midday trade on Nasdaq.

-- Liberate makes software that allows consumers to access the Internet via non-PC devices such as palm-top computers, game consoles, set-top boxes and smart phones.
