Hey! I'm glad you picked up on this. Sometimes I think this thread is going brain-dead.

People here have known for a long time that W-CDMA was/is snake-oil claim/tactic and the highest production and roll-out efficiences and consumer benefit would come from a harmonized standard. Royalties would be essentially the same. It's good that management has held firm on the royalty issue or convergence would never be achieved. Now it appears things are leaning toward a converged standard or, at the very least, standards that are easier to implement in dual-mode.

My guess is HDR will become the 3G standard.
