It's simple math. If you have pockets deep enough to write thousands of covered options, you also have enough resources and/or credit to make sure the stock closes where you want it to. Only works with liquid stocks- but then again any stock that has options is usually pretty liquid.

80% of options expire worthless. That tells you all you need to know. It means the people who write the options win 80% of the time. If the market weren't manipulated that figure would be a LOT lower.
