I was at a dinner where Kemp departed from text to contradict Ed Koch about "root causes", after Koch had given a strong pro- accountability speech. He gave a confused and emotional speech, talking about the importance of enterprise zones and home ownership in creating a stake in the system, which in itself was expected, but garbling the philosophical points. People around me muttered things like "he is losing it", and the New Republic did an article which exaggerated the magnitude of the gaffe.(Incidentally, he introduced JC Watts as a candidate towards the end). Although I thought some made too much of the speech, I knew then that he probably did not have the discipline to be a presidential candidate, and was even worried when he was tapped as the vice-presidential nominee......

Actually, Apple was in trouble before Jobs visited PARC in 1979. That visit inspired the Lisa, from which Mike Markkula removed him as project manager. Jobs bounced over to work on the Mac, which defined the future of Apple with its GUI.
