Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I'll have to look into the history of Mr. Allen a bit more deeply. One of my holdings At Home Networks (ATHM) is controlled by AT&T's majority interest, and that has been a concern to me also. The issue has come up occasionally on the ATHM bulletin board.

Years ago, before I ever dreamed I might own stock I read "The Rich and the Super-Rich" by Ferdinand Lundberg. In it he discusses how several families have retained their fortunes from generation to generation. Among them the Ford family. He discusses the importance of voting stock ..

"Still salvaging what they could in a bad situation, the Fords stipulated that the stock made over to the foundation should be nonvoting, leaving the 10 percent in the hands of the family with an initial 100 percent voting power.

Asked whether he would rather have all the Ford Motor dividends or company control, the average man would probably choose the dividends. He would be mistaken, for those in control determine whether there shall be any dividends at all. One in control could decide to invest earnings elsewhere until the designated dividend receiver came to some sort of terms, not disadvantageous to a controller. Control is always the prime objective of the true leaders in all large organizations -- political, financial, economic, philanthropic, educational or otherwise. For control determines everything that is subject to the will."

Something to keep in mind.
