THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Nov. 10

PRIVATE Internet Service Provider (ISP), Satyam Infoway, is hoping that the Centre will stick by the December 1999 schedule for clearing its application for setting up its own gateway enabling it to declare the Rs. 50-crore project operational from February 2000.

Announcing this, Mr. Pradeep Lakshmanan, Vice-President, Internet Sales, Satyam Infoway, told newspersons here that once the clearance comes through, the company would require at least eight weeks to get the project commissioned. Currently, the company draws on the bulk bandwidth of 26 MB drawn from the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), the national gateway provider, at six different locations. The company has placed a request for allotment of a further 22 MB, he said.

Mr. Lakshmanan was here on the occasion of the formal launch of the ready-to-use Internet connection, SatyamOnline, in Thiruvananthapuram. This is the 28th node that Satyam Infoway has set up across the country for its Internet service. Except in two locations _ Bhubaneshwar and Jamshedpur _ where it has a 64 kbps connectivity, all others, including Thiruvananthapuram, will have a 2 MB pipe. In Kerala, SatyamOnline already has a Point of Presence (PoP) in Kochi.

In the next one month, new nodes will be opened at Jamnagar and Surat in Gujarat, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Tiruvalla in Kerala and Mysore in Karnataka. In Kerala, the Tiruvalla node will be followed by those at Kozhikode, Kannur and Thrissur in the near future. The Coimbatore node is serving the Palakkad area and the Mangalore nod takes care of Kasargod which enables SatyamOnline to reach out to the entire State, according to Mr. Lakshmanan.

Satyam Infoway is proposing to make a major foray into the cybercafe business by January next, Mr. Lakshmanan added.
