Uh, . . . I'm not sure what the fuss is about. G*
*does* have a position location service.

Interesting that you would refer to a satellite phone
as "2lbs of deadweight", whereas an aviation radio is
a lifesaving device. Then, you say you would be
hesitant to use an aviation radio because it's illegal?!?

BTW, I've used handheld aviation radios *and* a G*
phone, and I can tell you that av radios are neither
smaller, lighter, or more durable than the phone I
used. Cheaper, yes, but what's the point? You've
already noted that they're illegal to use to attempt
to call your spouse, tow truck, etc. Furthermore,
their "coverage" sucks. They're only helpful if
another plane is overhead (and listening).

Aviation radio vs. G* phone ... it's no contest.

Where are all the Libertarians, shouting self-sufficiency? Maurice is right: cell-phones have saved lives. They have also led to people being called out because others were inadequately prepared.
Hang on a minute AJ. Libertarians don't say people should be self-sufficient. They say one shouldn't expect free service from other people. Of course Libertarians like to be fully socially integrated with a big and efficient economic system. They don't want their taxes used to pay for dumb people who get lost in a forest.

The easy answer is for rescue services who get the Mayday Globalstar call to give the caller a quote for rescue. Competing rescuers could bid for the business.

That's Libertarianism! Or they could pay an insurance fee beforehand. Stuff like that.

You sold? Heck! I hope you didn't sell Q! too.
