Watching a cloud of Junkers or Messyshits go up against a buncha Zeroes would have been kinda rough on the old national prestige thing. We, on the other hand, had all these planes with car names. Mustang. Lightning. Spitfire. Vista Cruiser. "Flight this is Red Six. Lone bogey four o'clock low." "Six, this is Two, copy. I got that Fokker in sight." Gosh, that one just doesn't seem to wear out.
