John, I don't think Bert McComas was using the pre-production VC820 board in his article. It is a 3 RIMM board, but I think this VC820 board will be similar in performance to the 2 RIMM boards coming this Monday.

<Intel has proved that two RDRAM channels is no more costly or difficult to produce than one RDRAM channel.>

I wouldn't say "no more costly." But you are right. It's interesting to note that 840 systems already have a pretty big headstart over DDR-based systems. For high-performance systems, two RDRAM channels will definitely be better than one DDR channel, and dual-DDR channel systems won't be here for quite a while. (Because of pin-count issues, dual-DDR channels may even require an additional memory bridge, which will increase latency.) The higher cost isn't much of a concern to me, since high-performance market segments are not as cost-sensitive.

Still, remember what I said about upcoming anti-Rambus FUD that could cause RMBS stock to take a short-term dip? The FUD is already beginning. The anti-Rambus coalition will claim that DDR is indeed faster, better, and cheaper than RDRAM. Some of their claims may even have some merit, which will only serve to bolster their credibility and allow them to continue making outrageous claims about the evil Rambus.

So for the time-being, it seems that DDR vs. RDRAM debate will have to be a VHS vs. Beta war of sorts. (Just watch, certain anti-Rambus people that we know will pop in and say that RDRAM is worse than Beta.) It may come down to a question of execution. Although Intel's execution may have been, er, less-than-stellar, it remains to be seen how well the anti-Rambus guys can execute with DDR.
