Ousted Leader in Pakistan Is Charged With Treason

By CELIA W. DUGGER

NEW DELHI -- Almost a month after he was ousted from power in a swift bloodless coup, Pakistan's deposed prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, has been accused of hijacking and kidnapping for what military officials say was his treasonous refusal to allow a plane carrying the army
chief to land at an airport in the port city of Karachi.

If convicted, Sharif and other officials accuse in the case could face the death penalty.

The charges against Sharif, which became known Thursday
morning, are at the heart of the armed forces' justification for the Oct. 12 coup and revolve around the still murky events that precipitated the military takeover. The charges were leveled by the military in a formal complaint to the police, who will now undertake an investigation.
