ITU Recommends 5 Standards>

ITU to recommend 5 new cellular phone standards

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1999 2:22 AM
- Kyodo News

GENEVA, Nov. 11 (Kyodo) -- The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will
recommend five types of next-generation cellular phone global standards next May
when it holds a convention in Turkey on wireless communication, ITU sources said
Thursday.

The five standards include a CDMA formula proposed by Japan and the European
Union and a separate CDMA formula developed by Qualcomm Inc. of the United
States, the sources said.

The convention will put an end to years of work undertaken by the Geneva-based
ITU on drafting global standards for next-generation cellular phones.

The phones would be capable of high-speed data transmission so that they could
send and receive video signals to or from anywhere around the globe.

In Japan, NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. plans to launch the
next-generation cellular phone service in 2001 as the Ministry of Posts and
Telecommunications plans to recognize two of the five standards.
