Again, you're evaluation is incomplete. Please look at it from this perspective.

What is the cost to switch automotive brands? Pretty low really, just the cost of the vehicle plus the potential cost of additional upkeep. Because the buyer has so many different makes/models a disatisfied consumer can easily switch to a competing brand. This type of market motivates the producer to build it better, faster and cheaper.

Now this is true. Back when the imports first hit the shores there was quite a deal of resentment and hostility toward anyone "anti-American" enough to buy an import. In the auto manufacturing towns you could expect your vehicle to be vandalized if left out in public. If I remember correctly, and I may not because I was only a teenager during the 70's (born 1963), the government was even contemplating implementing punitive tariffs that would have price the Japanese cars out of the market.

All of this added a great deal to the cost of buying an import, which can't be measured solely in dollar terms. A lot of people my parents' age still say "I'll never buy one of those god damned imports."
