GM Starts Delivering Longer-Range NiMH EV1s

11/09/1999

Los Angeles - General Motors Corp. has begun delivering its 1999 EV1 electric cars in California that feature longer-range nickel-metal hydride batteries, according to GM Electric Vehicle Marketing Services Manager Rick Ostrov. The new electric vehicles have a ''real world'' driving range of 75 to 140 miles or more. Posting to the EV1 Club e-mail list, Ostrov said, ''I'm happy and pleased to announce the deliveries of the Generation II EV1 with nickel-metal hydride batteries has commenced. The first group will be delivered in Southern California Saturn retailers over the next week, starting today.'' Ostrov gave no more details, but GM Advanced Technology Vehicles Director of Strategic Planning William Ball said seven were delivered to California. The automaker previewed its 1999 model in December, 1998, saying deliveries would begin Jan. 1, 1999 (News Notes 11/25 & 12/3/98). However, the launch was repeatedly delayed by a longer-than-anticipated ''engineering validation process'' (News Notes 6/8/99). An unconfirmed posting said the automaker is also delivering five new EV1s to Atlanta, Georgia customers on Monday.
