Tandy shares jumped 6-3/16 to 71-3/8 in the first 30 minutes of dealing on the New York Stock Exchange before trading in the stock was halted pending a news announcement. Microsoft shares were up 2-1/2 at 89-11/16. Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, said Chairman and Chief Executive Bill Gates and President Steve Ballmer would hold a conference call at noon EST (1700 GMT) to discuss a "significant strategic alliance." Further details were not available. Wall Street has speculated that Tandy could do a deal to feature the Internet services of either Microsoft or Internet service provider America Online Inc. AOL at Radio Shack. "Radio Shack will choose between AOL and Microsoft as local Net store partner soon," Merrill Lynch analyst Peter Caruso said in a report on Thursday. He said the loser could seek out Circuit City Stores Inc. CC as an alternate retail Internet partner. "These partnerships transform (consumer electronics) stores from Internet risk to Internet gain," Caruso wrote. Circuit City shares were up 5-1/8 at 43-1/4. CNBC, a business news TV network, reported that Microsoft was rumored to be taking a stake in Loral Space & Communications Ltd. LOR , a satellite company. A Loral spokeswoman declined to comment on the rumor. Loral shares were up 4 at 20-1/2. Last week the federal judge hearing the government's antitrust suit against Microsoft found the software giant to be a predatory monopoly that had punished its rivals and harmed consumers.
