Sierra Wireless Shares Rise 58% in Two Days on U.S. Contract


Richmond, British Columbia, Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Sierra
Wireless Inc.'s shares rose as much as 58 percent in two days
after it announced a US$30 million contract to build modems for a
company controlled by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

Shares of Richmond, British Columbia-based Sierra rose
C$4.30 (US$2.93) to C$26.25 in mid-afternoon Toronto trading.
Earlier the stock touched a 52-week high of C$26.40.

The Canadian maker of wireless data equipment said Monday it
will build modems for Metricom Inc., which is launching a 128
kilobit-per-second wireless data transfer system in 46 U.S.
cities.
''That's fast,'' said Phoebe Young, a spokeswoman for
Sierra, in an interview. ''It's probably the fastest speed there
is in terms of wireless.''

Los Gatos, California-based Metricom offers wireless
Internet service to portable computer users. Its ''Ricochet''
system is running in Washington, San Francisco and Seattle.

Allan and MCI WorldCom Inc. recently invested US$600 million
in Metricom. Allan owns 45 percent of the company; MCI WorldCom
owns 35 percent.

Metricom fell 13/16 to 42 13/16 in mid-afternoon Nasdaq
trading.
