Still doesn't register. We did attach a can to each end of
a long string and play "telephone". Sort of early fiber telecom.

I remember those. My sister got a pair one Christmas. They had an incredibly brief heyday right around 1970 or so. When you got them going, they were LOUD ... you could spot the kids who were good with them a thousand yards off.
They got recalled in a hurry because they broke, and the resultant shrapnel moved fast enough to cause injury. Lawn darts came and went around the same time period. I think that was the beginning of the end product liability-wise; the Nader report was still fresh in people's minds.
