Captain: The weather was terrible especially for Americans and Commonwealth troops not used to the rain and damp of Europe. The soldiers lived for months in dug-outs, ankle deep in mud, suffering from "trench foot" fungus and all kinds of other infections. We had a family friend who worked at a reception camp for troops brought back into Britain and she told us harrowing stories of how difficult it was to clean soldiers from months and years of accumulated grime, rid them of infections and build up their strength.
