Madurai Telecom Promises 'Internet for all'

By Uday Lal Pai

[November 11, 1999--MUMBAI] For the first time in India, Tamil Nadu-based Madurai Telecom, an offshoot of the department of telecom (DoT), is introducing a new Net service - Internet for All! This facility would enable any person having telephone connection and hardware (PC and Modem) to get Internet access.

"There is no need for either registration, obtaining user name and password or authentication by the node," said Dr. S Hariharan, general manager, Madurai Telecom. The company in addition to the existing Internet facility offers this facility.

Under the new facility, apart from getting instant access, the subscriber would pay according to usage without the fear of lapse of registration due to time limits. There is no need for initial lump sum payment. (All ISPs in India collect registration fee and first payment for 100 hours in advance)

Browsing time is unlimited for the Internet user with secured access. The user need not wait for obtaining user name and password. But the subscriber will not get a direct e-mail address. So he will have to avail of other free services offered by various e-mail servers like Hotmail, Yahoo or others.

The subscriber (those are interested in the service) only need to dial 172223 and the node at Madurai would permit Internet access without any authentication, Hariharan said. To ensure that the service was not misused, the customers were provided with dynamic lock facility as in the case of long distance and international calls.

The DoT has allowed Madurai Telecom to start the facility, which would be metered at one unit for every ninety seconds. The rate is comparable to that charged for the existing Internet facility.

Hariharan said many other secondary switching areas were willing to introduce the 'easy Internet system' and had sought details from the Madurai Telecom.
