People on one of the threads brought up a link to Dr. Dean Edell's Healthcentral article commenting on Zicam. While I was at work today, I was thinking about his comments, then composed and sent the following e-mail to him: *************************************** Dear Dr. Dean Edell: I am a physician and I am a stockholder in Gum Tech, International (Nasdaq:GUMM), the public parent of the LLC GelTech that makes the cold remedy Zicam. I have read your article about Zicam and while I think you are being fair, I think that one of your analogies is not quite on the mark and that you can learn something by reading these comments. Specifically, the point you make about spraying saline "up one's nose" is not directly comparable to the application of Zicam to one's nasal passages. This is because Zicam is not sprayed deep into the nasal passages or sinuses; it is applied directly onto the epithelium and, in a sense, spread on top of it. I have enclosed, under my e- signature, the directions for application of Zicam taken from the www.zicam.com website and that point will be clear when you read them in detail. This point about the application of the gel to the epithelium in the nares rather than spraying up the nose (presumably into deep passages) further explains why the postulated mechanism of blocking the viral entry to the cells via the ICAM is plausible. Anyway, I enjoy your show with your thoughtful attention to medical issues and hope you mull over this point regarding your comments, which I think were fair. As you may know (if not, consult GUMM press releases or call GelTech's Dr. Hensley at 1-877-942-2626), the company has sponsored additional Zicam rhinovirus treatment and prophylaxis studies in which they have no direct involvement. Thank you for your consideration. If you have any specific questions to me, I may be contacted directly at xxx-xxx-xxxx during business hours. Sincerely, Howard D. Epstein, M.D. ********************* enclosure from website: ********************* How do I apply the nasal gel? ZICAM™ comes with an easy-to-use nasal pump. To clear the nasal passageway, blow your nose prior to using ZICAM™. Remove the safety clip. Hold pump with thumb at bottom and nozzle between fingers. Prior to initial use, prime ZICAM™ pump by holding upright and pumping several times (into tissue paper) until solution is dispensed. If you have not used the ZICAM™ pump for 10 days or longer, prime again before using. Place tip of pump just past nasal opening (1/8 of an inch), angle the tip of the nozzle towards the outermost portion of the inside of the nostril, and spray once into each nostril. It is not necessary to sniff up nasal solution. After application, press lightly on the outside of each nostril for about five seconds. To keep clean, wipe nozzle after each use. Put the plastic cap back on the nozzle and replace safety clip. Reapply every 2-4 hours until symptoms subside. After symptoms subside, continue use for an additional 48 hours. Consult a physician if symptoms persist.
