Sorry for my delayed response (again). From the limited research I conducted it appears very difficult to trace an email directly to it's original source, especially if the sender has made any attempt to remain anonymous. Tracing to email providers seems much easier than to the actual party sending the email.

I would have researched further but the email in question is lost anyway.
