GTE Sets Its Sights on DSL Triple Crown with Covad, NorthPoint, and Jato EVENT: November 9, 1999 - GTE Internetworking, a division of GTE Corp, announced the expansion of its national broadband network to offer high-speed Internet access service across the United States. In addition, GTE Internetworking has signed deals with Covad, NorthPoint Communications, and Jato Communications to help build out its DSL network beyond its traditional service area. With its Covad, NorthPoint Communications, and Jato Communications agreements GTE Internetworking will extend its services to Atlanta, Miami, San Diego, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York City by early next year. GTE Internetworking also announced plans to expand into smaller markets in 2000. ANALYTICAL SUMMARY: We are taking a positive stance on GTE's DSL agreements with Covad, NorthPoint, and Jato because they will enable the ILEC to deploy DSL services quickly across its territory. Carriers like MCI WorldCom already have a substantial, national DSL presence, which makes speed a critical element of this deployment. GTE's DSL agreements with Covad, NorthPoint, and Jato will have a moderate to high impact on the industry because they herald a large-scale deployment of DSL services from one of the industry's biggest players. GTE aims to drill down to small business customers and lower tier metros with its DSL offering, placing vendors at all levels on notice that GTE is coming to town. We believe GTE's agreements with Covad, NorthPoint, and Jato are of high importance. The company needed to respond to competitors' and marketplace demand for broadband access quickly and with a proven, reliable service offering. The challenge for GTE will be melding the different DSL offerings from the three data CLECs into a single GTE branded product. MY COMMENTS: IS THIS (AND YOUR POSTING) THE REAL SIGNS THAT DSL HAS PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN AND WILL "CARPET BOMB" THE US WITH ADSL?
