NORTEL NETWORKS: Nortel Networks builds UK's fastest optical network for Thus

M2 PRESSWIRE-12 November 1999-NORTEL NETWORKS: Nortel Networks builds UK's fastest optical network for Thus (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

LONDON -- The pent up demand for bandwidth intensive data traffic in the UK received a boost from Thus, the newly branded Scottish Telecom, and Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT]. Thus has gone live with Nortel Networks' 10 Gbit/s transmission platform, the fastest optical networking technology available today. This will allow the service provider to offer high-speed voice, Internet, e-mail and data intensive services to business and residential users.

According to analysts at Ovum(1), voice will represent less than 3% of European network traffic by 2005. Their recent study on Internet Telephony forecasts that the number of online users will skyrocket from 38 million today to 150 million - half the population of Western Europe - within the next six years.

The network went live following successful trials in March of this year. This new high-speed optical layer will significantly increase the speed of voice and Internet traffic between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Thus plans to expand this network nationally over the next three years.

The network incorporates Nortel Networks' advanced TN-64X SDH multiplexer utilising DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology capable of delivering up to 320 Gbit/s. "The installation of this technology will relieve the ongoing congestion problems facing the current network and avoid future network downtime," said Bill Allan, chief executive, Thus. "We chose Nortel Networks because of their ability to deliver ahead of the competition and because their solutions are not only highly reliable but also scalable to 1.6 Tbit/s. This will allow the network to grow in line with our specific customer demands."

"Emerging providers are installing fibre to take advantage of cost-effective technologies to meet the growing demands for greater bandwidth. By deploying the 10 Gbit/s platform, Thus have taken a significant strategic step forward and will be able to offer customers truly scaleable solutions which will allow services to be delivered to customers much faster." said Ron Patterson, vice-president, Alternate Operators at Nortel Networks.

"We estimate 2.5 billion hours were wasted in 1998 while people waited for web pages to download," added Masood Tariq, general manager and vice-president of Nortel Networks' International Optical Networks division. "This translated to billions of dollars in lost productivity and sales. By addressing the underlying capacity of the Internet backbone, optical technology will dramatically reduce these issues."

Thus, which aims to be one of the UK's leading data and Internet solutions providers, offers integrated communications solutions for a wide range of customers from SMEs to large corporate customers. Through the Demon Internet brand, Thus is the largest web host in the UK and fifth largest in the world(2) providing Internet solutions for prominent UK organisations including the BBC. Joint venture Scotland OnLine boasts a comprehensive online recruitment service which is delivered in partnership with DC Thomson and Co. Thus, which has invested heavily in an advanced fibre optic network in the UK, also delivers a wide range of call centre services, ranging from data collection to complex consultancy. International and UK national partners include Compaq and Microsoft. Thus, a subsidiary of Scottish Power, has sites across the UK and in the Netherlands. Turnover for 1998-99 was GBP166M with GBP11.5M operating profit.
