Oracle to Back IBM-Led Unix Standardization Effort

SOMERS, N.Y. (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM - news). and Oracle Corp (Nasdaq:ORCL - news)., usually fierce rivals, on Friday said they would collaborate on an IBM- led effort to standardize the Unix operating system.

The two companies said they would work together to unify IBM's version of the Unix operating system with Monterey/64, a project backed by IBM, Unix software maker Santa Cruz Operation Inc (Nasdaq:SCOC - news). and chipmaker Intel Corp (Nasdaq:INTC - news). to make a mass-market version of Unix.

Unix, a software operating system commonly used to run powerful business computers, competes with Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq:MSFT - news).'s Windows operating system.

In the face of growing competition from Microsoft, Unix backers, which include some of the world's largest makers of computer systems, have banded together to unify the fragmented operating system, which traditionally comes in a variety of flavors that run mainly on only one company's systems.

As part of the new pact, IBM and Oracle said they would offer Oracle Internet Directory within AIX and Monterey/64 as a method for customers to navigate information stored in such systems.

Oracle also expected to convert its database and application software products, which now run on AIX, among other flavors of the Unix operating system, to run on Monterey/64.

''The agreement marks an expansion of the business and technology relationship between IBM and Oracle on AIX and Monterey/64, Rajiv Samant, general manager of IBM's UNIX business said in a statement.

The two companies are arch-rivals in the database software market, where they battle for the No. 1 market share position.

Oracle shares added 2-13/16 to 64-7/8 on the Nasdaq stock market in active trading. IBM shares were 13/16 lower at 94-5/16 in the early afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange.
