Intel accounts for one third of Costa Rica exports
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, Nov 11 (Reuters) - The world's
largest computer chip maker, Intel Corp. <INTC.O>, accounts for
a third of Costa Rica's exports, Central Bank president Eduardo
Lizano said on Thursday.
Lizano added that exports so far in 1999 had reached $5.0
billion by the end of September, of which overseas sales by an
Intel microprocessor plant on the outskirts of the capital San
Jose accounted for $1.6 billion.
"Intel's exports represented $1.6 billion up to September,
and we believe they will reach $2.0 billion by the end of
1999," Lizano told reporters.
Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., operates a $500
million plant at La Ribera de Belen, about 20 km (12 miles)
northwest of the capital, producing Pentium II microprocessors.
It opened in March 1998.
