I started The Wanderer awhile back, and somehow got sidetracked. Hmmmm, I even already have a copy!...As for Mann, my argument is that he has had a great impact on the reading public, especially in The Magic Mountain and Doctor Faustus, and therefore deserves a place. I know, it is hard to gauge, but there are many people who feel the TMM, especially, was a watershed in their intellectual life (not me, I read to much actual philosophy, but I understand).....

See, if we take a sector, everything becomes easier because one need not be so parsimonious:

Literary Greats (in no particular order)

Eliot, Lawrence, Forster, Shaw, Joyce, Hesse, Mann, Ionesco, Yeats, Di Lampadusa, Pound, Sinclair Lewis, Rilke, Sartre, Camus, Solzhenitsyn, O'Neill, Anhouil, Brecht, Bellow, Stevens, Kafka, Langston Hughes, Katzanzakis, Nabokov....and so on......

Well, I hope you're happy, Joan. I just printed this posting to remind me to head for the bookstore tomorrow on my way back to the house from hell.
