DJ:" Union "

well, yeah - we've been unionized down here in the South ever since we lost The War of Northern Aggression in 1865 (^_^)

We had this holiday the other day, called "Veterans Day", when Americans honour all their past and present Military service men and women, back to The Revolution.

We don't celebrate the war on drugs but, we do now refer to Korea and Vietnam as "wars" - though you could get in trouble (at the time) by doing so. And some of our history books now recount The Persian Gulf War but, Kosovo/Serbia is still a current event; ie., "conflict"...

...and The Cold War is still blurry; we'll probably need another 50 years, the benefit of retrospect, to be able to recount the 50-year Cold War as a war, where all the survivors thereof were de facto veterans.

Even after 150 years, the American Civil War remains the most difficult war for us to come to terms with: along with all the other war stories told and films shown, our media rarely display anything about the Civil War on Veterans day. There may be images of Medal-of-Honour winners from the Union side but, there were no such hero veterans who died in the trenches defending Richmond or, defied Sherman, for example.

Indeed, Confederate memorabilia in general or, the Confederate flag in particular are considered by many to be "bad taste" on American Veterans Day. Yes, DJ - we are unionized, indeed.

It's difficult for us to honour all our war-dead, when history says, and many of us know - some were good, and some were evil, regardless of their courage - because of their convictions. But then I can well imagine you understand this dilemma in Deutschland, there being nothing American about war or, for that matter - veterans.
