You forced me to get out some documentation.

Some random comments

Termination is specific to cables. ie each cable must have a terminator on the end of it or the last device on the cable must be terminated.

Is your 68 pin harddrive Ultra2 Wide? or is it Ultra wide? Is your 68pin connector on the mobo Ultra2 wide or is it Ultra Wide?

The Ultra 2 68 pin cable that was supplied with my card is not a ribbon cable. It is a flexible mass of wires. It is supplied with a terminator on the end. I believe one can put an active terminator or a passive terminator on the end of the cable. I do not know which one I have..currently this cable is not installed.

A note from the docs

We recommend keeping your Ultra 2 peripherals separate from your non-ultra 2 peripherals. Connecting a non-Ultra2 peripheral to the Ultra2 SCSI connector forces the Ultra2 SCSI segment and any attached peripherals to drop down to Ultra SCSI performance levels (40 MBytes/sec).

Also

Using Wide Ultra SCSI Hard Disc Drives To avoid termination issues, we recommend that the last device on the internal 68 pin Wide Ultra SCSI cable is a 68pin Wide Ultra SCSI device.

I do not see anything about performance issues mixing 68pin (Wide Ultra) and 50 pin (Narrow Ultra). Wide just gives you the option for more devices.

Since your existing setup does not seem to be correct wrt termination of your harddrive it is hard to predict how termination should be set if you add a new device.

The manual indicates you have to terminate the connector on the back of the computer if you do not have an external device connected. I disconnect my external device and do not terminate the connector and have not noticed a problem. I do not have any internal devices connected to the in/out cable. The SCSI harddrives are connected to a different connector on the host adapter.
