Hmm, might not a purse snatcher use a penknife to cut the straps of his victims' bags? Actually I'd have thought a somewhat larger knife would be needed, but I'll defer to Blinky's knowledge of the craft.

It would seem that Eddy thinks Auric could do better as a petty thief.

The "pen knife - handbag" refers to a once-common way of stealing a woman's handbag, even when the strap was over her shoulder. Grab the bag, cut the strap with a pen-knife.

It would seem that Eddy feels Auric is in the same category as petty thieves, stealing social security checks from old ladies.

Why he feels that particular activity would be most appropriate near the bus station on Market St is beyond me. Especially since the bus station is several blocks south of Market. Closer to Mission. I guess Zinc messes up your sense of geography too.

That is the only part of it I can speculate on.
