Bank One Corporation will not sell its First USA credit card unit. Despite the fact the unit reportedly has been dragging down earnings at the nation's fourth-largest bank holding company. Fred Cummings, Analyst with McDonald Investments Incorporated says despite some problems, First USA is good for the corporation.

Stewart to Leave First USA to Pursue Internet Interests

WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- First USA today announced that James W. Stewart III, executive vice president of partnership and Internet marketing for First USA and president and chief executive officer of WingspanBank.com, will resign effective December 31, 1999.

"After careful consideration, I have chosen to consider several Internet- based financial-service opportunities," said Stewart. "It has been a great pleasure to be a part of First USA and all that it has accomplished during my 11 years here."

"Jim has provided tremendous guidance throughout his tenure at First USA," said William P. Boardman, chairman and chief executive officer, First USA. "Thanks to his leadership, First USA has developed a very successful partnership marketing program with more than 2,200 partners. In addition, Jim was instrumental in the development of First USA's online initiatives, including WingspanBank.com. Jim has been a great friend and advisor to me during my time at First USA. Gary J. Marino, executive vice president of marketing, will assume responsibility for the partnership marketing area and continue to report to Boardman. Marino joined First USA in August 1995 after serving more than 14 years with Citibank, where he was executive director of credit for North American bankcards.

Michael J. Cleary, executive vice president of Internet marketing for WingspanBank.com, will take over the day-to-day management and operation of WingspanBank.com and will report to Boardman. Prior to joining WingspanBank.com, Cleary served as president and chief operating officer of Smart Carte, Inc., overseeing worldwide sales, marketing and operations. Previously, he served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Pinnacle Brands where he was responsible for marketing, operations, creative, information technology, legal, licensing and human resources.

"Both Gary and Michael have extensive experience, skill and leadership that have and will continue to prove useful to both First USA and WingspanBank.com in maintaining industry leadership," said Boardman.
