Helen really likes the wooden puzzles. She is becoming quite good at them. The one that's stretching her now is a pair of hands - the eight fingers, two thumbs and palms are separate pieces. The digits are numbered, and the palms are marked L and R. She is almost to where she can do that one "by the numbers". It really is fascinating to watch her mental gears work as she picks up a digit, looks for the correct slot, then turns it on all three axes looking for the fit. When she's tired, the attention and gentleness seem to disappear all at once. Then she'll either try to bang the piece home, or she'll hand it to Spouse or me in capitulation. At that point of course, we'll stick the piece in place with minimal fuss or explanation. I've learned that Helen will work on it if she's in a learning mood.
One puzzle has circus shapes, ten holes and nine pieces. (Wups.) She'll get the nine, then make piteous questioning sounds and point at the vacant slot. It hurts her as much as me to see the thing visibly incomplete, nicht in Ordnung. A dent in the Tao.
