I haven't read anything by Roddy Doyle yet. Saw the movie The Commitments and enjoyed that. According to the Salon review, his writing is getting better with every book. A Star Called Henry is rich with the language of 1900 Dublin, I think one of the reasons Joyce still attracts. It's also the first book of a trilogy. This might be an epic in the making.

Q. Have the Irish preserved the faith preached to them by St. Patrick?
A. Yes; the Irish have ever been conspicuous for their devoted attachment to the faith from which not all the horrors of persecution nor the blandishments of proselytism have been able to separate them.
From the Catechism of Irish History.

That was taught to every Irish kid until relatively recently. That'll shape character, alright. (Or warp some characters)
