Just a reminder, Frank, that might prove to be useful to all of us in the future.

It wasn't until [Qualcomm was] confirmed on 3/25/99 that they even appeared on our radar screen as having a chance to join the elite.

That's true. However, that's only because I (we) were ignorant of a critically important source of information -- the CDMA Group website. In reaction to the 3/25/99 Ericsson announcement, I took the stock off my radar screen and plopped it into my turbo-charged research pile. As part of my research, it was either in this folder or the first Qualcomm folder that someone told me about the website. It was there that I saw that Qualcomm's product had been in a tornado since at least April, 1998, a year prior to the Ericsson announcement. Had I known about that website, I hope I would have been trumpeting the call to arms a year earlier than I did.

Central to the point you were making about risk: All of our returns would have been greater than waiting until the Ericsson deal and, I believe, without increasing risk. I very strongly believe it was the year-old tornado that caused Ericsson to cave. Ericsson simply couldn't wait any longer to sell to the adopters who had been laying out the cash to Ericsson's competitors.

There's a lesson in that story about researching other products that have already crossed the chasm.

For someone getting into the gorilla game today, what would you suggest (either now, or on a dip?).
