Well, I haven't posted or read much of this thread for the past 2-3 months. I heard that Noble is going to buy Global Marine, but apparently Global has some kind of lawsuit against it coming that may prevent it from happening at this time (I didn't listen to all the details). One of the persons I was speaking to said that they thought the buyout was going to be released yesterday (Friday).

A friend of mine who works for SLB told me today that SLB is expecting to have a lot of difficulty hiring people for the increased demand in the domestic US during the next year. Boy have times changed.

E & P's vs. Drillers:

Just out of curiosity, I compared the return of the drillers and the
E & P's over two different time frames, 12/31/98 to the present,
and 10/15/99 to the present. I used the following E & P's: APC,
BR,NBL,OEI,PXD UPR and XTO. Here are the drillers: ESV, FLC, GLM,NE,PDE,PDS,PTEN,RDC,SDC and UTI. The reason I selected
these particular companies is because I have positions in all of
them. The YTD average return for the E & P's is 22% vs. 117% for
the drillers. The average return for the last month for the E & P's
is a negative 5% vs. a positive 11% for the drillers. My portfolio
has been weighted approximately 3 to 1 in favor of the drillers.
I don't know what the future will bring, but this tells me that in the
past, in these two time frames at least, the drillers have out-performed
the E & P's.
