Irish Shares End Mixed; ISEQ Overall +0.5%

DUBLIN -(Dow Jones)- Irish share prices ended mixed Friday on a quiet day in
the market, with little company news affecting activity.

"It was typical Friday trading with no very strong movers," said one Dublin-
based trader.

At the close, the 79-share ISEQ Overall index was up 24.91 points, or 0.5%,
at 4633.71. The narrower ISEQ Financials index was at 6747.46, down 53.55
points or 0.8%.

Over the course of the week, the ISEQ Overall gained 0.5% from last week's
close, and the ISEQ Financial was up 1.7%.

Telecommunications company Eircom showed strength ahead of its first set of
interim figures next week, closing up 15 cents at EUR3.97. Dealers said the
share is recovering from an oversold position and is moving closer in line with
the sector across Europe.

"It could be there are buyers ahead of the (interim) figures," one Dublin-
based trader said of Eircom's rally.

Bank of Ireland continued its push higher on the back of better-than-expected
results Thursday, closing up 2 cents at EUR8.27 .

Other financial blue chips didn't fare as well, with Allied Irish Banks down
18 cents at EUR12.17 and Irish Life & Permanent down 20 cents at EUR10.20.

Bank of Ireland and Irish Life & Permanent have said they are considering
making a joint bid for Ulster Bank, which is being sold by the U.K.'s National
Westminster Bank to defend itself against against Bank of Scotland's GBP21
billion hostile bid.

Traders said pharmaceutical company Elan continues to stabilize after sliding in recent weeks on news of a delay in the launch of a migraine drug. The share
in Dublin closed up 25 cents at EUR23.75.

Building materials maker CRH was up 17 cents at EUR17.15, recovering from
weak positions earlier in the week when it was drawn lower along with the
sector, dealers said.
