But the question remains; who carried the day? Belloc and Chesterton spent their lives valiantly battling modernism and they were steamrolled. They put up vigorous arguments their opponents inadequately responded to, but after their deaths nobody else carried the ball, and their opponents had legions of apologists. There is a Chesterton society in St. Paul who gather monthly "to smoke cigars in his name". If I'm ever up that way, I'd like to sit in on one of those.
