Had an Aunt Myrtle. For family gatherings she always
brought her bran rolls and lemon chess pie. Both were
scrumptious. But not so many little Myrtles anymore.
Nor little Gertrudes. Hardy Boys had an Aunt Gertrude.
Their mother was Laura, one of the old names that has
survived.

That salad sounds great... one of those "gotta make it" ones...

Funny thing about names, eh?... How they go out of style...

Like "Horatio" or "Archibald" or.."Beryl" or "Martha" or "Eunice" or "Chloe"...

Speaking of Horatio... How about Horatio Alger... He used to be a major pop-fiction writer of his time... Yep.. I kid you not. Go to just about ANY farm auction and about half the books in the boxes of books that sell for $3.00 will be Horatio Alger's novels... Did you ever see that book "Ralph Raymond's Heir"? I figure that there must have been just about one in every home... maybe sitting next to a well-worn copy of the bible.

We had 2 or 3 of them at our cottage... Think we acquired them at various farm auctions over the years. When I was young, one of the copies seemed particularly thrilling to me... On the leather-bound cover, there was a young man wearing a big mexican looking sombrero and those really wooly chaps, riding a wild-eyed horse while swinging a lariat... the figure was embossed and then painted onto the leather... it was fantastic! They sure don't make covers like THat anymore... However, I tried to read the book on numerous rainy days... but it seemed really...well...boring...

Yep... Horatio... they don't make names like they used to...

>>>>>Goddam flavors. Little nuisances, the bastards are.<<<<<

Good point. It's really irritating, now that you mention it.
