Zi Lands Legend Contract, Its Biggest China Deal Yet

CHINAONLINE.COM (11/11/1999) Canadian language software maker Zi Corporation announced this week its biggest China deal to date. In a licensing and royalty agreement with China's leading computer maker, Legend Computer Systems, Zi will put its Chinese language software on a range of Legend products, including Legend's TV set-top box that powers Microsoft's new Venus operating system, an Internet TV platform specially designed for the China market.

Over the past five months, Zi has signed a series of key deals that have significantly raised the company's profile in China. In the summer, Zi inked a deal with China's Ministry of Education to install its input software on the country's nationwide school computers.
Zi has also completed a number of deals with Chinese cellular phone makers to help make inputting Chinese text faster and more intuitive.
Earlier this month, Zi acquired the Beijing Oz Education Network Inc, a Chinese software maker. Under a series of contracts with various Chinese ministries, Beijing Oz is developing and distributing Internet-based education materials for both elementary schools and job training centers. The contract is designed to solidify Zi's revenue stream and expand its distribution network in China.
Microsoft has said that it expects manufacturers will be able to deliver Venus to the China market on schedule by the end of the month.
