Another overlooked one is Thomas Hardy - Oxford University's curriculum (of the English Department) lists him as a 20-century poet while a 19-century novelist. Based upon literary anecdotes it was his lifelong wish to be known as a poet.

Lu Xun is considered the spiritual leader of modern China, post 1911 - .

If you talk to any literate person in or from China about, you will get the feel of the immensity of LX's presence.

PS: Lu Xun was educated as a physician, like William Carlos Williams, but he wrote prolifically in a wide spectrum of literary genre: fiction, poetry, assays, criticism and drama. Similar to Neruda, Lu Xu was also a revolutionary and social reformer.

Beckett is certainly on my mind.....the problem is one of room, if the list is to be fairly inclusive of various kinds of contributions....
